Featured Book of the Week

This week’s featured book is the Tale of Peter Rabbit. I thought this book would be perfect to feature with Easter coming up. We’re in the early days of Spring and it won’t be long before there are little bunnies hopping around in my back yard. This is a board book that I’m sure all kids would enjoy. Say What?

Today just wasn’t meant to be a good day for me. Yesterday was a beautiful Fat Tuesday and I enjoyed the four hours I spent in the thick of all things Mardi Gras. I was worn out by 5 in the afternoon and slept until it was time to get ready for work this morning. I always check the news as soon as I clock in and this morning I was appalled by the first article I read. It appears that Congress thinks it would be a good idea to cut funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). No, Congress. This is a terrible idea! The citizens of this country deserve access to the services provided by libraries across the nation. I spend a lot of my free time in the library. I’m a single parent that can’t afford to buy all of the books that I want to read. I definitely don’t trust all of the information on the internet. Yes, I still conduct research at the library. I’m a nerd.

So, I am asking everyone that cares to please ask Congress to avoid making this huge mistake. Click on the link below and fill in the blanks. It’s super easy. Long live the library!

My (terrible) Reading Habits

Lately, I have sucked at finishing books in a timely manner. It’s not that I don’t want to read. I just haven’t had the time. Between work and posting books for sale in my online bookstore, I have been dead tired at the end of the day. I haven’t even cleaned my room! (Let’s keep that between us). I am making a promise to myself that I will start and finish books in a time appropriate manner from this point forward. No more going longer that 12 hours without reading at least one page. I guess that means I can’t repeat binge-watch Stranger Things on Netflix.

While we’re on the subject of me reading, I did finish a very enlightening book about two weeks ago. You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero is the only self-help book I have ever been able to finish. I loved every minute of it! She has a way of getting her point across without talking down to her readers. I guess it’s because she’s been there. I could vividly imagine some of her anecdotes because I have been there, too. This lady can relate to being broke, depressed, and completely lost in life. I also love how she doesn’t push her help on you. Her attitude is very “I’m gonna leave this help right here and if you want it, take it. If not, then continue to struggle without bothering me”. I really like that.

To help myself read more this year, I decided to join the 2018 reading challenge by Goodreads. My goal is to read 75 books this year. That’s 1.5 books a week. I’m already a month behind. I’m going to take advantage of my job closing early on next Monday and being closed all day on Fat Tuesday. Speaking of Fat Tuesday, since most of the day is spent eating and waiting on parades, I think I’ll take my books along with me. I’m very bad about completing any kind of challenge. I want to finish this time. My daughter thinks I can do it. I don’t want to let her down. I told her that if she reads 75 books I’ll buy her a new bike. I will keep you guys posted on my progress and the deal with my daughter.

Long time, no…read?

Heyyyy! I know it’s been a while since my last post. I have had so much going on. First, there was my move. It took much longer than I anticipated. I didn’t officially finish moving until the day before my surgery. My surgery was a lot harder on me than I expected. Who knew gas could hurt so bad? I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Three days after my surgery my daughter wanted to have ice cream and cake to celebrate her upcoming birthday. Ice cream and cake quickly turned into a small party at her Maw-Maw’s place. Three days after that, on her actual birthday, my sister felt the need to repeat the ice cream and cake event since she missed the first. The next few days were spent helping my daughter pack for her trip to Disney World. She left for her trip on November 4th and I was all set to relax for a few days while she was gone. God had other plans. My brother died the next day. I was not ready. The next week involved lots of planning, talking, hugging, crying and the unfortunate task of having to inform my daughter that her uncle passed away. With everything going on, yesterday was the first day that I picked up a book in about three weeks. I tried to read on those nights when I just couldn’t fall asleep, but I couldn’t make sense of the words on the pages. I turned on my computer more than once to try to write. No words would flow. I guess it will just take time to get back into the groove of things.

Maybe I’m trying to make up for lost time, but I am now currently reading two books. The first book is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I’m reading that to Kenzie at night. We read all the way to chapter 5 last night and we love it! The second is (still) “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth. I hope to finish that one ASAP! My doctor gave me strict orders to chill this week. She said I’ve had too much going on after such a major surgery. I agree.
