All Book’d Up for the Hurricane — October 7, 2017

All Book’d Up for the Hurricane

Hey there, fellow book lovers! Unless you live under a rock, or you really just don’t care that much about weather, I’m sure you have heard all about Hurricane Nate. Here along the Gulf Coast we can’t help but hear about ol’ Nate. Coverage is on every channel. Don’t get me wrong, I know that hurricanes are serious business. However, I have lived here my entire life and I believe I have a good idea about when I should panic and when to take advantage of being stuck in the house. This is a case for the latter. I decided to pack up myself, my kid and her guinea pig and head to my mama’s house for the weekend. My child and her pet will be entertained by my stepfather, and I will be able to finish my current read, Allegiant (Divergent Trilogy). I have really enjoyed reading this trilogy. I hate that it’s about to end. I admire Tris’ strength and her determination to fight for what she believes in. Her character is so kick ass, but very human as well. We’re able to see and understand her fears, what makes her happy, and how she thinks, all without being overwhelmed with too much detail.

Along with reading, I will also be able to get some planning and brainstorming done. So much can be accomplished while stuck indoors. I have some ideas for future blog posts and a couple of book hunting trips I need to plan.

I look forward to learning about what happens to the characters that I have grown so fond of. I’m also excited about catching up on some much needed rest. I’ll check in after the storm. If you’re near the coast, please be safe and do what you should to protect yourselves.

Long time, no…read? — November 15, 2017

Long time, no…read?

Heyyyy! I know it’s been a while since my last post. I have had so much going on. First, there was my move. It took much longer than I anticipated. I didn’t officially finish moving until the day before my surgery. My surgery was a lot harder on me than I expected. Who knew gas could hurt so bad? I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Three days after my surgery my daughter wanted to have ice cream and cake to celebrate her upcoming birthday. Ice cream and cake quickly turned into a small party at her Maw-Maw’s place. Three days after that, on her actual birthday, my sister felt the need to repeat the ice cream and cake event since she missed the first. The next few days were spent helping my daughter pack for her trip to Disney World. She left for her trip on November 4th and I was all set to relax for a few days while she was gone. God had other plans. My brother died the next day. I was not ready. The next week involved lots of planning, talking, hugging, crying and the unfortunate task of having to inform my daughter that her uncle passed away. With everything going on, yesterday was the first day that I picked up a book in about three weeks. I tried to read on those nights when I just couldn’t fall asleep, but I couldn’t make sense of the words on the pages. I turned on my computer more than once to try to write. No words would flow. I guess it will just take time to get back into the groove of things.

Maybe I’m trying to make up for lost time, but I am now currently reading two books. The first book is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I’m reading that to Kenzie at night. We read all the way to chapter 5 last night and we love it! The second is (still) “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth. I hope to finish that one ASAP! My doctor gave me strict orders to chill this week. She said I’ve had too much going on after such a major surgery. I agree.

Recovery Reading List — October 18, 2017

Recovery Reading List

In just over a week I will have surgery. I’m not at all afraid. This won’t be my first time going under the knife; however, my daughter and I are moving back to my mom’s house. I have gotten used to having my own personal space, living according to my schedule, and actually (finally) getting my kid on a decent schedule. Alas, this is what will be easier for everyone involved. The good news is, I’ll be off work for six whole weeks! This gives me so much time to catch up on my reading. I made a list of books I want to read while I recover. Staying at Mama’s house means hundreds of interruptions. This means that there is a strong chance that I will not complete the entire list. So, here is my Recovery Reading List:

  1. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
  2. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
  3. Sing, Unburied, Sing: A Novel by Jesmyn Ward
  4. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  5. Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
  6. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

There you have it! My Recovery Reading List. Check in for updates on my progress as I knock this little list out during my time off.
